How we came to celebrate BLACK HISTORY MONTH!
Most of us don't know how we came to celebrate "Black History Week"?
Founder: Carter G. Woodson,
considered the "father of Black History".
considered the "father of Black History".
The initial concept was a week-long celebration to highlight Black achievements
and culture which at this time was pushed "under the rug" even as it is TODAY!
"Black History Week" can be traced back to historian, Carter G. Woodson. on February 7,1926
He first proposed a dedicated week to celebrate and educate about Black History.
His intentions were to encourage the coordinated teaching of Black History in schools.
He started Negro History Week" (because that's what they called US, AT THAT TIME)
This eventually evolved into "Black History Month" which is now celebrated in February,
It became acceptable by President Gerald Ford officially recognized it in 1976.
BUT, since this time everybody and everything has a month.
(ex: Cotton Candy Month, Hispanic Heritage Month, Restaurant Week,
Brain Awareness Month, National Women's History Month,
Irish-American Heritage Month, National Deaf History Month, Asian Pacific American
Heritage, Older Americans Month, Jewish American Heritage Month, AND THE LIST GOES ON.)
Even though THEY try to trivialize the importance of "Negro History Week" WE SHOULD
honor it and push it to new heights.
